ANDREAS ANDREADIS
Andreas Andreadis (also known as Andrew Andréadès) was a leading Greek economist of the early 20th century, Professor of Public Finance and Statistics at the University of Athens (1906-1934), a founding member of the Academy of Athens and corresponding member of major foreign scientific institutions. He served as an advisor to Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, took part as an expert in the Paris Peace Conference (1919) and participated in the London Economic Conference (1933). He studied law and economics in Paris and London and received his Ph.D. from the University of Paris in 1899. He is considered the father of public finance in Greece, which he introduced as a discipline into Greek higher education, and mentored a new generation of economists. Being a prolific writer of treatises on public finance, including his monumental A History of National Loans (1904) and A History of Greek Public Finance (1918), he is also acclaimed as the founder of Greek economic history. His work History of the Bank of England 1640-1903 (Paris 1904, London 1909) was the first systematic history of the Bank of England and made him known in economist circles across Europe. J.M. Keynes, in his obituary in The Economic Journal, hailed Andreadis as “a man of wide culture, almost as much interested in literature and the arts as in politics, economics and history”.
